- What if I didn’t get treated for my disability while I was in the military?

Answer: The VA may deny you service connection for a disability, by finding that service treatment records did not show treatment for the disability. However, the VA cannot deny you service connections simply because you did not seek medical treatment while in service, unless treatment would have been required for the type of disability you are claiming. So, if your disability was one that did not necessarily require treatment, or if you did not realize you had the disability at the time (as is often the case with sleep apnea), The VA is not supposed to count this failure to seek treatment against you.

Years of firing weapons without adequate hearing protection can cause ringing in the ear syndrome also known as tinnitus. If you experience high pitched ringing in your ears or hear sounds that don’t exist externally such as clicking, roaring, humming, or hissing you could qualify for Veteran Affairs benefits.

If you've already rated for conditions such as TBI, hypertension or even PTSD, but not for tinnitus, it may make sense to put in a claim for tinnitus.

- How do I prove an event in service if it happened while I was in combat?

Answer: The VA recognizes that most combat related injuries are unlikely to be shown in the medical record, due to the conditions of combat. Therefore, as long as the event or evidence are consistent with the circumstances, conditions, or hardships of service, the VA is supposed to take your word that the event did happen, even if there was no record of it.
