They changed the name because "Hogtown" didn't sound like a place where fortunes were made. 🐷➡️🛢️

In 1918, a quiet farming community in Eastland County, Texas hit oil. Within months, Desdemona, formerly known as Hogtown, went from a handful of farmhouses to a roaring boomtown of 10,000 people. Derricks went up overnight. Saloons, supply houses, and gambling dens followed. The streets turned to red mud under the weight of wagons, automobiles, and men chasing the same dream that was already making Ranger famous just down the road.

But Desdemona burned bright and fast. By the mid-1920s, the wells were slowing. The crowds thinned. The storefronts emptied. Today, fewer than 200 people call it home, and most Texans have never heard of it at all. The name change didn't save it. The oil didn't stay. But for a few wild years, this little Eastland County town was one of the loudest places in Texas. 🤠

Most people don't know that the oldest Dr Pepper bottling plant in the world wasn't in a big city. It was in Dublin, Texas. Population: not many. 🤠

In 1891, a man named Sam Houston Prim started bottling Dr Pepper in this small Erath County town, and for over a century, Dublin did something no one else on earth was doing: they kept using the original Imperial Pure Cane Sugar formula. While every other bottler switched to high-fructose corn syrup, Dublin never changed. Not once. Texans drove hours out of their way just to get a case of the real thing, and "Dublin Dr Pepper" became one of the most beloved regional food legends in the entire Lone Star State.

For 120 years, that little bottling plant on Main Street was more than a business. It was a point of pride, a piece of living history, and proof that some things are worth protecting. Nobody told you that one of the most beautiful courthouse squares in all of Texas sits in a town most people only discover by accident. 🏛️

Granbury, Texas has been keeping that secret since 1891. That's the year Hood County finished building its limestone courthouse on the square, and from the moment it was done, the town grew around it like it had always been there. The square filled in with storefronts and saloons, a hotel and a hardware store, and on Saturdays the whole county came to town. Farmers, ranchers, families from the cedar breaks and the river bottoms, all of them circling that courthouse like it was the center of the universe, because for them, it was.

What makes Granbury remarkable isn't just the building. It's that the square never really changed. While other Texas towns tore down their history to build parking lots, Granbury held on. The opera house is still there. The storefronts are still there. And that limestone courthouse is still standing exactly where Hood County put it, watching over the Brazos River country the same way it always has. 🤠
