We are without words as we mourn the unexpected and far too early loss of Fred Miller. Fred was an undisputed leader of the local legal community. He dedicated his life to community service, and we were honored to be part of his journey until he rose from the magistrate bench to the common pleas bench earlier this year. Miller, Kistler & Campbell is thrilled to welcome Robert H. Bascom, Jr. to our firm. Well-known and liked throughout our region, Rob has practiced law in Centre County for more than twenty-five years. Approximately twenty years ago, Rob co-founded and began operating Tussey Settlement Services, Inc., which ultimately became one of the area’s premiere real estate closing companies. Over its twenty years, Tussey Settlement Services oversaw closings for myriad transactions, ranging from routine residential sales and refinances to multi-million dollar commercial purchases. Rob was instrumental throughout all of those transactions, providing his keen insight and deep knowledge of the law, paired with his collegiality and overall friendliness.

We are ecstatic to announce that John Lhota has been awarded the John R. Miller, Jr. Civility Award. John R. Miller, Jr. was a titan of Centre County law and our law firm for many years. Having one of our own win the award is doubly special. The award states as follows:

"The John R. Miller, Jr. Civility Award. In recognition of a lawyer's continuing commitment to the highest ideals of civility, collegiality, and candor and unswerving dedication to client needs, while never losing sight of the highest professional standards, as exemplified by John R. Miller, Jr. (1919-2007). Awarded annually by election by the Judges of the Centre County Court of Common Pleas."

We of course already knew that John Lhota embodies all of those characteristics in everything he does, but it is wonderful to see the world recognizing those characteristics, as well. And to make the award even more special, it was given by our longtime former colleague, Judge Brian Marshall. Congratulations to John and all of our employees who represent the firm so well day-in and day-out.

We are beyond sad this morning to share that a longtime, beloved member of our team, Shirley Gaines, has passed. Shirley was tough as nails, having served as the first female Deputy Sheriff in Clinton County, yet she was also so kind, patient, and caring over her nearly 30 years of work at our firm, especially for our estate planning and estate administration clients. Shirley will be greatly missed.

Dave Consiglio has been an institution not just in our law firm but with so many of the clients and communities that we serve. He joined our firm more than 25 years ago, and he is a bona fide member of our Miller, Kistler & Campbell family. So, although we want to continue working with him forever, we are honored and truly excited to support him as he announces his candidacy for judge in Blair County, where he lives. When hiring a new firm, consider asking for a copy of their latest attorneys’ fee petition for a client, and the outcome of that petition. Those petitions are public record, and they will provide a good insight into what you might be paying if that law firm chooses to handle your matter, and whether a judge believes those fees are reasonable. Unfortunately, many firms are known for charging clients exorbitant fees, yet they continue to do so because old habits die hard.

When clients win certain types of cases, the other side must reimburse their attorneys' fees.
