Basketball coaches often say, "The best defense is a good offense." But does this principle apply to corporations seeking to defend their networks from malicious hackers?

In a recent policy brief, Dr. Irving Lachow discusses the wisdom and legality of "hack back," or offensive measures taken to deter cyberattacks. We will hear Dr. Lachow speak about this topic at SJIL's symposium, THE VIRTUAL BATTLEFIELD, on April 11-12.

Check out Dr. Lachow's article, and come to our symposium!

Enjoy the article. And please come to our symposium!

An overwhelming percentage of online attacks originate from one area of a Shanghai neighborhood, home to a Chinese army unit.

On April 11-12, 2013, the Stanford Journal of International Law will host a two-day symposium on the role of international law in promoting cybersecurity. As Senator Lieberman noted in the New York Times today, hackers pose credible dangers to US and other countries' interests. Come to SJIL's symposium to learn how private actors and governments can (and cannot) invoke the law of nations to counter the cyberthreat.

Twice this year, the Senate failed to pass bipartisan cybersecurity legislation, with the United States Chamber of Commerce leading the opposition. The new Congress must not repeat this mistake.
