🚨 Scam Alert: “Pay Now to Get Them Out of Jail” Calls 🚨

We're seeing a growing number of scams in our area targeting families and friends of people who have been arrested.

Here's how it works: Someone calls or texts you claiming your loved one is in jail. They say they're a bail bondsman, a jail employee, or even law enforcement. Then, they pressure you to send money immediately so your loved one can be released. It sounds urgent. It feels real. It's a scam.

They might say:
"They need bail right now, or they'll stay in jail all weekend."
"I'm calling from the jail. We need payment immediately."
"Don't tell anyone else, just handle this quickly."
"Send the money through CashApp, Zelle, gift cards, or a wire transfer."

They will likely use your loved one's name. They can spoof phone numbers to appear official. They sound convincing, calm, and authoritative.

Red flags to watch out for:
🚩 Urgency - They push you to act immediately without giving you time to think.
🚩 Emotional Pressure - They try to scare you or make you panic.
🚩 Unusual payment methods - Requests for gift cards, apps, wires, or cryptocurrency.
🚩 No verification - They won't let you confirm details or speak to your loved one.
🚩 Secrecy - They tell you not to contact anyone else.

It's important to know that jails, courts, and legitimate bail bondsmen DO NOT operate this way. You will not be asked to send money blindly over the phone under pressure.

Take a breath. Don't rush. Hang up and verify the situation by calling the jail directly using a publicly listed number. Contact an attorney or a known, local bail bondsman. Try to reach your loved one or someone who was with them.

If something feels off, it probably is. Trust your gut instinct!
