Food Justice

People of color are the most severely impacted by hunger, poor food access, diet-related illness and other problems with the food system. The food justice movement works not only for access to healthy food for all, but also examines the structural roots of these disparities — and works for racial and economic justice, too. This work isn’t new. What gets lost in the predominant narrative about urban white foodies obsessing over the latest food trend and statistics on poor health outcomes for minority groups is that people of color have been bringing historical injustices in the food system to light and have been working toward empowering alternatives.

The Perron Law Firm recognizes the importance of pro bono work in the community.

Especially in these challenging times with so many people being laid off or even fired from their jobs because of the Coronavirus pandemic, it is important for lawyers to consider representing clients on a pro bono arrangement. The Perron Law Firm recently won an appeal from a denial of unemployment benefits for a client who was fired from her job as an officer clerk. The employer said she did not return to work although she had a valid medical reason which the employer would not accept. The matter was appealed to an administrative law judge with the Division of Employment Security. A virtual hearing was conducted with our client and her employer giving testimony. We were successful in arguing that the employer did not have just cause to terminate our client and the decision was reversed in her favor.
