If it appears on a screen, I’ve done the deal to get it there and I’ve been in court when the deal wasn’t done correctly.

What’s on your screen? What’s on my screen? Here are a few examples:

The Missouri Film Tax Credit application – helping clients navigate it to produce films in Missouri.

YouTube – learning new music for my classic rock cover band .

Jon Hamm! – he plays a small-town sheriff in two shows, but they are wildly different characters – Fargo (a terrifying bad guy) and Maggie Moores (a loveable good guy).

Basketball – not the year for the SLU Billikens, that’s for sure.

And more - tune in and find out!

When your birthday falls on Thanksgiving, it’s a special reminder of how much there is to be thankful for. I am grateful for all the birthday wishes I’ve received from friends old and new, for a Bloody Mary with my Pop, a walk in beautiful Tower Grove Park with my love Christine Lyons Salsich, a morning Facetime with Erin Salsich, an amazing intimate dinner with Courtney, and a special surprise gift from Peter W. Salsich IV, who knows his dad well. Much love and gratitude to you all.

What do George Clooney and Brad Pitt have in common?

Among other things, they’ve both appeared in films produced by Michael Beugg.

A native of St. Louis and a longtime successful Hollywood producer, Michael has helmed some of The Screen Lawyer’s favorite films, including “Up in the Air”, “La La Land”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, and “Thank You for Smoking”.

He’s also a veteran of bringing films on location to utilize tax incentives in different states to help finance his films.

On this week’s episode of The Screen Lawyer Podcast, Michael joins us to talk film producing, locations, tax incentives, and even tells us what’s on his screen!

Are YouTube movie reviews – which use clips from the copyrighted movie itself – Fair Use under copyright law?

Yes!

It’s not even a close call – movie reviews are a classic example of the type of commentary and criticism that has long been recognized as Fair Use.

Yet movie studios continue to issue takedown notices to platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and others for movie reviews, in direct violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

But there’s a way to fight back under Section 512(f) of the DMCA.

Check out this week’s episode of The Screen Lawyer podcast with .french to hear all about her experience with this very issue (and much more!).

This is big, big news for the entertainment industry in Missouri!

After years of effort by many different groups, yesterday the Missouri House and Senate finally passed legislation creating significant tax credits in support of the Missouri film and music industries. It is now just awaiting Governor Parson's signature to become law of the state.

For too long, films and shows that were set in Missouri were actually filmed in other states because those states had tax incentives to lure the millions of dollars of production money, and major touring acts would bypass Missouri because they didn't have the facilities and incentives to rehearse and build concert tours here.

Now creative companies in Missouri - and others seeking to take advantage of our mix of local talent, interesting city architecture, small towns, and beautiful rural landscapes - will have a meaningful incentives to do so here in the Show Me State. This will support local creative communities and attract talent from around the country to spend time - and money - in our state.

The proposal could help an entertainment venue in Chesterfield.
