Step 4: Past Relevant Work

In this step of the disability determination process, SSA reviews your work history and the jobs you held prior to when your disability began impacting your ability to work. The idea is to assess your residual functional capacity (RFC) to determine if your condition prevents you from performing the work you were able to in the past.

Step 1: The first item SSA reviews in the five-step process is SGA or Substantial Gainful Activity. Are you working? If you are engaging in "Substantial Gainful Activity" or earning income beyond the threshold mandated by SSA, you are generally not considered disabled under SSA guidelines.

FACES BEHIND THE FIGHT FOR VETERANS: Ashley Baine

Ashley has been with Parmele for 23 years. He attended Missouri Southern State University in Joplin for his undergraduate degree and the University of Missouri School of Law. If he had not studied law, Ashley says he would have been an FBI agent. In his spare time, Ashley enjoys reading, puzzles, crossword puzzles, playing golf, going to baseball games and amusement parks.

When asked what he enjoys most about working on our VA team, Ashley shared, “I’ve worked in VA disability for 3 years now. The best part is when we can help a veteran get VA benefits that has been fighting for them for years. It is satisfying no matter the situation but those are the ones that feel special.”
