American Gothic is a 1930 painting by Grant Wood that depicts a farmer and his daughter in front of a farmhouse in Eldon, Iowa. "Wood intended the painting to depict the farmer and his daughter as survivors, to pay homage to the strength of the rural community, and to provide reassurance in a time of great economic upset." Anyways, I hope he was able to give his farm to his daughter by having a proper estate plan in place.

What is a Transfer on Death?

A transfer on death is a tool that can be used to transfer ownership of a property to someone else when you die. Property transferred this way avoids probate and even overrides your will if you attempt to transfer the same property in it. The person you choose is able to take ownership of the property by filing a simple form after your death which can be easier and faster than the probate process. Should I put my house in my kids' names?

We advise against it! Transferring your house to your children can create a lot of problems. After the house is deeded to the kids, ownership could end up changing for any number of reasons. In most cases, you would likely pay more taxes than if you transferred the property after death.
