As we enter into this next period of recovery and healing, we are updating our process of issuing vouchers. Please help us spread the word. Vouchers are still available to those impacted, but the process of receiving a voucher will look a little different. Email [email protected] to initiate this process. Vouchers allow those affected by the Spokane Complex Fires to freely and discreetly shop our thrift store for whatever they need to rebuild.

Children don’t need perfect adults. They need adults who help them feel safe, loved, heard, understood and included.

A child who feels listened to is more likely to speak up.
A child who feels they matter is more likely to believe in themselves.
A child with clear, kind boundaries learns that care and limits can exist together.

Behaviour is often communication. Behind the anger, silence, withdrawal or “acting out” may be a child asking: “Do I belong here? Am I safe? Does anyone understand me?”

Every child deserves to feel seen—not just when they are easy to manage, but especially when they are struggling.

Mark your calendars! The Kids Jr. Fire Academy is Saturday, Sept. 12, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at River Park Square. Come meet your local firefighters, tour and see demonstrations from a ladder truck and fire engine, learn hands-only CPR, make a craft, operate a charged fire hose, learn about child passenger safety, and so much more! Kids can collect stamps at each activity and receive a Jr. Firefighter certificate.

In just one moment, children lost their homes, belongings, and clothes. They are now facing the difficult task of starting over with almost nothing left. 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks is collecting new socks, underwear, shoes, pajamas, and hygiene kits for newborns to teens. FREE DAY CAMP: Spokane Public school is offering a free emergency drop-in camp for children ages 4 and older on Monday, Aug. 3, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Shadle Park High School.

This is intended to give parents and caregivers impacted by wildfires a safe place for their children while they take a break, run errands, or address other immediate needs. Students do not need to be enrolled in Spokane Public Schools or live within SPS boundaries to attend.

Lunch will be provided at noon through the federal free summer meals program. Activities will be supervised by Spokane Public Schools staff. Please reach out at SpokaneSchools.org/Contact to connect with district support.

University High School senior Camren Breeden turned a simple class project into something life-changing for a classmate.

After noticing fellow student Daniel, who is blind, struggling to navigate school with a flimsy, homemade mobility aid, Camren got to work. Using materials from his Career and Technical Education (CTE) class, he designed and built a custom walker to better support Daniel’s independence.

Inspired in part by his own uncle, who is also blind, Camren created a sturdy, easy-to-maneuver device with a wheeled base and properly fitted handles—allowing Daniel to move through hallways more safely and confidently.

Daniel, who lost his vision during the COVID-19 pandemic and is nonverbal, previously relied heavily on others to get around. Now, thanks to Camren’s compassion and ingenuity, he has greater autonomy and freedom at school.

With support from CTE teacher Eric Puyear, the project continues to evolve, with plans to refine the design and build additional devices for other students.

This incredible act of kindness and innovation is a powerful example of what it means to truly see and support others in our school community.
