ADOPTED as per ACC :)

RHL lameness - possible cushing disease - 13 year old senior

Sweet Senior PEPPERIDGE needs a new retirement plan and follow up for possible Cushing's Disease.
Abandoned in front of BACC, her owner didn't bother to housetrain her properly nor groom her nails
This 13 yr old senior lady deserves much much better and needs TLC and a home where to spend her golden days. PLEASE MESSAGE OUR PAGE or EMAIL US at [email protected]

A volunteer writes:
Since the moment I caught a glimpse of her, I have been impatiently waiting to meet Pepperidge. And let me tell you, she didn’t disappoint one bit. She was even better than I imagined! Spunky doesn’t even begin to describe this elderbull - she has a huge personality packed into a little old lady’s body. She hops about after toys, jumps to get anything she had her eyes and heart set on, and carries toys around showing them off proudly. She has a voracious appetite, and eagerly takes treats and stomps around demanding more. She has aged like a fine bottle of wine - a 13 year old vintage in her case - and is utter perfection.
Pepperidge was surrendered by a friend of her guardian for having potty accidents and because they could not trim her nails. They did not leave much information, but we know Pepperidge was loose and wiggly with the staff that received her at the shelter. She may have some underlying medical needs, and the shelter can review that information with potential adopters. To meet her, love her, and spoil her for the rest of her spunky days, come to Brooklyn ACC.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:
9/6: Upon being removed from her kennel, Pepperidge begins biting and pulling on the handler's lead. She quickly stops when offered treats.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 2

Recommendations:
No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:
No young children (under 5): Due to the high-level lack of manners, anxiety, and touch sensitivity, seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children.

Potential challenges:
House soiling
Basic manners/poor impulse control
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Handling/touch sensitivity
Anxiety
Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:
House soiling: Pepperidge is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement and reward-based training only. Please see handout on House Soiling.

Basic manners/poor impulse control: Pepperidge jumps up on handlers often during her assessment. It is possible that this an attention-seeking behavior. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute for any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control.

Mouthiness/poor impulse control: Pepperidge takes treats with a hard mouth leaving red marks and teeth impressions on hands. This should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition.

Handling/touch sensitivity: Pepperidge was reported to not be comfortable when her nails are trimmed. Limited information was provided, so it is unknown what methods were used. It is important to avoid touching Pepper's paws at this time and to be cautious when touching her in other areas as we do not know where she may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement and reward-based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Pepperidge to be more comfortable with this.
