Several new laws went into effect in Connecticut on October first. While a full list of them can be found on our legislative website, there are a couple that we thought should be shared with our followers. They are as follows:

DRIVING IN THE LEFT LANE: Left-lane driving on multi-lane highways (including I-95, I-91, and the Merit Parkway) is restricted to passing, preparing for a left exit, or avoiding obstructions. A violation of the law will result in an $88 fine for non-compliance.

• DISTRACTED DRIVING IN A WORK ZONE: Using a handheld phone, texting, or watching videos while driving in a highway work zone will now be prosecuted as reckless driving rather than a minor infraction. This violation will result in a mandatory loss of license.

• SCHOOL BUS PASSING: Drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus three or more times will now face a 6-month driver's license suspension.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families forever changed, and the first responders and everyday Americans who showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy. We also remember what followed: communities coming together, neighbors helping neighbors, and a shared sense that, despite our differences, we were one. Twenty-five years later, that spirit of unity, compassion, and togetherness remains worth remembering and carrying forward. May we never forget those we lost, and may we always remember the strength we find in standing together.

As many of you have heard, on July 4th, 18-year-old Zaniya Dawkins was struck and killed by a stray bullet. Zaniya was a beautiful young women preparing to start nursing school in the fall. The family is devastated and are without the financial means to pay her medical expenses and the burial costs. A GoFundMe page has been started.
