For September, National Recovery Month, remember that legal services may help resolving legal challenges, to help support recovery of individuals overcoming substance use disorder.

LSNWJ offers free legal assistance to eligible people facing legal concerns with housing, family, expungement of criminal record, debt, public entitlements, unemployment insurance benefits, and documents like wills, powers of attorney and health care directives.

This is a free, in-person opportunity to learn from experienced lawyers about how and why to do expungement work, to increase awareness, and to promote pro bono and volunteerism. Get CLE credit, too.

If your child's right to attend a school district is challenged, learn your rights with LSNJ. If your current situation involves:
>Temporary housing shelter;
>Staying with family or friends because of loss of housing;
>Temporarily in a hotel or motel;
>Transitional housing;
>Domestic violence or runaway youth shelter;
>Vehicle (including a mobile home);
>A tent;
>Temporary shelter for migrant farm workers on a farm site;
and if you are enrolling a child in school, tell the district board of education about the housing situation, and ask for the school district liaison.

All school districts must have a person assigned to help homeless students and their families with:

>Help with school registration.
>Make sure the student is enrolled and attending school.
>Make sure the student is receiving any educational or other services they are entitled to or need.
>Make sure parents have a chance to participate in their child’s education.
>Ensure the student has transportation services.

Many people will NOT be affected by these rules. This includes:

Adults 65 and over
Parents and primary caregivers of a young child
People with certain health, family, or life conditions that are considered "exemptions".

New rules, effective January 1, 2027, generally apply to people who meet all of these categories:

Adults 19–64
On Medicaid expansion
Without exemptions.

You can complete any combination of the following activities (also called “Community Engagement” or “CE” activities) to keep receiving your health care coverage.

Any combination of activities = 80 hours per month:
Working a paid job or being self-employed'
Being enrolled as a student in a college or vocational program;
Participating in a work training program;
Volunteering for an agency or nonprofit organization.

For now: Watch for notices
Update your contact info with NJ FamilyCare.
Track your work and study hours to see if you already meet the new activities requirements.

Get in the habit of keeping records of approved activities, such as pay stubs or school enrollment forms.
