Two different cases - both resulting in greencards for two women.

One is from Colombia who was made to endure 6 years of court proceedings. But we were able to prove to the judge that the allegations against her were not supported by any evidence and the judge granted her greencard in court. Her two US citizen daughters hugged her tight after the hearing as tears streamed down her face.

The other is from Mexico who was told multiple times by different lawyers that she did not have a path to a greencard because of an old deportation order. We stepped in and got her case reopened and she was granted a greencard by a judge last month. She went to the office to pick up the physical card today and brought in a beautiful flower arrangement that she made herself.

In these uncertain and stressful times, we find hope in cases like these - that hardwork and a good legal strategy can still prevail - that we can continue to keep families together as best as we can.

The Department of Homeland Security is not always a harsh adversary. In most cases, one will find that a clear and convincing argument can work - even in 20 year old cases like this one.

Through perseverance and the help of DHS counsel, a case is going to be reopened and our client is one step closer to getting legal status in the US.

We are so thrilled for our client who finally became a greencard holder a couple of days ago.

He never even realized that he was granted asylum 18 years ago. He came to us upon the prodding of his siblings. We read through more than 300 pages of his record and found his asylum approval buried near the end.

It took 8 months from filing to approval and we couldn’t be happier that we made it happen for him.

Four other lawyers tried and then the family came to me for help. With numerous positive equities in the US and a clean criminal record, we approached DHS counsel and our efforts paid off when they joined us in our motion to reopen her case. With no deportation order hanging over her head after almost 30 years, we are now one step closer to getting permanent residency and legal status for her.

More than 2 years of written and oral arguments, position papers and legal briefs paid off today as we convinced the Department of Homeland Security to join us in a motion to dismiss the removal proceedings against our client who has been a lawful permanent resident (greencard holder) for more than 10 years but was alleged to have committed fraud and misrepresentation.

We were able to show that the allegations were misplaced and that she should not have been placed in deportation proceedings.

This will now pave the way for her to finally apply for naturalization or citizenship and help her continue taking care of her family in New York.

In a world where asylum-seeker’s claims are being rejected under a skewed reading of US law that does not acknowledge gang violence, corruption, or state-sanctioned domestic abuse as basis to grant protection, to win and get a judge to grant a client’s case is truly a huge feat.

We are fortunate to have helped a family find peace after all these years after a judge in Philadelphia heard our case and granted asylum last week.

This is why we do what we do.
