When you hire a lawyer, it is important that you review the retainer or fee contract. That contract spells out the expenses and the scope of work that will be involved. Most lawyers do not charge consultation fees. The standard contract is what is known as a contingency fee. The contingency fee is a percentage of each award or settlement obtained.

Contingency fees in Ohio usually range from 25% to 33% for Administrative claims and 40% if the matter goes to Court. Expenses are advanced by the lawyer’s office to be repaid out of the awards or settlement.

Some attorneys charge “office expenses” of $50-$250 on every case they handle. Some firms do not require these funds. The quality of representation should not depend on the “office expenses” charge. The “office expenses" charge is negotiable and should be questioned. Before signing a contract to hire a lawyer, read the contract and decide whether other good attorneys are available who do not have an “office expenses” charges per claim. Since Bureau of Workers' Compensation claims have limits on damage awards, keeping your expenses down is key to a good recovery.
