The Hard Questions We Get Asked in Criminal Cases and What You Should Know
We hear these questions all the time:
“Should I talk to the cops if I didn’t do anything wrong?”
“If I plead guilty, will I lose my job?”
“Will this mistake ruin my future?”
“I’m scared — what happens next?”
Here’s what we want people to understand:
✅ You are not required to answer police questions without a lawyer present. Even if you’re trying to clear your name, what you say can still be used against you. Politely ask for an attorney, it’s your right.
✅ Pleading guilty can carry lifelong consequences, not just jail or fines, but your job, housing, and even your ability to hunt or drive. Always talk to a lawyer before agreeing to anything in court.
✅ One mistake doesn’t define you, but how you respond to it might. The earlier you get legal advice, the more control you have over the outcome.
If you or someone you care about is facing criminal charges in South Dakota, we’re here to answer the hard questions and give honest guidance every step of the way.
