California's legislature has passed the long-awaited Homestead Increase Bill, which would raise the current homestead exemption from a flat $75,000/100,000/175,000, to an adjustable number based on the median price of homes, minimum $300,000, maximum $600,000. This is HUGE news for anybody with a home who has been contemplating filing a bankruptcy, as the homestead exemption is frequently the thing that determines whether a homeowner can file a simple Chapter 7, or a 3-5 year payment plan Chapter 13.
