INTROSPECTION: A key barrier to strategic thinking, according to Libby’s research, was simply “time” – HR professionals need time to process the internal and external information available. She wrote: “HR professionals are hindered by interruptions, forced to focus on the short-term” and “are often bombarded by day-to-day administrative tasks.”

INTERACTION: Strategic thinking requires networking and collaboration. For instance, one respondent said that strategic thinking depended on “reading and participating in sessions with experts in both HR and non-HR areas.”

INTEGRATION: "Strategic HR professionals have a broad knowledge of the business. They must be able to see the multiple interconnections between various business units – and understand the impact of each of those units on the organization as a whole."
