NORMAN PINE, a Certified Appellate Law Specialist, State Bar of California, has been recognized with a wide variety of professional honors. He has consistently been named to the Southern California Super Lawyers listing of top appellate law attorneys (as chosen by peers and Law & Politics magazine) since that distinction was first created. Moreover, in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, he had the special

honor of being recognized as one of only a few appellate lawyers in Super Lawyers “Top 100 Attorneys” in Southern California. In 2009, he was honored by The Daily Journal as one of California’s top 10 plaintiffs’ employment lawyers. Experience, and especially creativity, make him highly sought-after to handle appeals involving multi-million dollar stakes. In 2008, BEVERLY PINE and NORMAN PINE were jointly honored with the California Employment Lawyers Association, Joe Posner Award for their “continuous dedication to the advancement of employee rights.” In 2003, NORMAN PINE was voted “Appellate Lawyer of the Year” by the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. BEVERLY PINE was repeatedly nominated for Appellate Lawyer of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. With many years of combined legal experience, NORMAN PINE AND BEVERLY PINE bring to their work superb writing skills and analytical abilities. The Pines are relatively unique among appellate lawyers in that they each have many years of complex business litigation experience against the top firms in the country. Thus, they truly understand all aspects of the litigation process which makes their advice to trial lawyers invaluable even before cases actually reach the appellate stage. Such advice includes development of creative litigation strategies, effective post-trial motions and identification of potential issues for appeal or cross-appeal. SCOTT TILLETT, a Certified Appellate Law Specialist, State Bar of California, has been named to the Super Lawyers 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Southern California Rising Stars list, a selection shared by no more than 2.5 percent of lawyers in the state. In 2019, he was selected as one of five finalists for the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles Appellate Attorney of the Year Award. He has exclusively practiced appellate law since 2014, handling a wide range of civil appeals including employment, business litigation, personal injury, entertainment, defamation, child molestation, class actions, trusts and estates, arbitration, government immunity, and land use, in both state and federal court. Prior to focusing on appellate law, SCOTT TILLETT’s practice included class action litigation involving wage and hour, product liability, and consumer fraud issues, in addition to individual employment, personal injury, and product liability litigation at both the state and federal level.

The Daily Journal recently named 74 honorees in its “Top Labor
and Employment Lawyers 2021” issue. Of those 74 honorees,
only 23 handle plaintiffs’ employment or labor cases.

It is therefore with great pride that we announce that 2 of
those 23 honorees are PTP attorneys, Scott Tillett and Norman
Pine. For 11-year lawyer Scott, this is the first time his skills and
excellent reputation have been so honored. Norm has been
recognized every year but one since the award was first created
in 2009.

PTP also extends warm congratulations to our colleagues in
other firms who were also recognized with this honor:

Bernard Alexander, Lawrence Bohm, Gina Browne, David
deRubertis, James DeSimone, Rodney Diggs, Lee Feldman,
James Finberg, Tamara Freeze, Carol Gillam, Genie Harrison,

Congratulations to partners Scott Tillett and Norman Pine! The Daily Journal has selected them as co-recipients of the 2021 "California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year" for their work on the B.B. v. County of Los Angeles case.

The CLAY awards honor only a select few attorneys for legal achievements that have a significant impact on public policy, the law, or a particular practice area. Undoubtedly, the B.B. case will have resounding effects in both the fields of tort and civil rights.

Norman Pine, Scott Tillett, and the team at Pine Tillett Pine LLP, along with John Sweeney, Olu K. Orange, Michael Seplow, and Paul Hoffman won a Supreme Court victory on behalf of Darren Burley, a black man who was killed in 2012 by LA County Sheriff’s officers who responded to a domestic disturbance call in Compton. Burley is not a household name because the incident was not caught on camera, but the officers used a carotid chokehold, put their knees on his neck and head, and struck him in the head with a flashlight, among other acts of excessive force. After the incident was over and Burley was handcuffed and his feet shackled, the officers left him face down on the concrete despite an eye witness account that his head hit the ground with a loud thump and he looked like he was not breathing. None of the officers administered CPR or any other potentially life-saving care, including turning him on his side like they are trained to do to allow him to breathe. Burley died as a result of the officers’ excessive force, leaving 5 minor children without a father. Together with our co-counsel, we were able to hold onto the $8 million the jury awarded to Burley’s family. The money will not bring Burley back, but it does hold the officers and the LA County Sheriff’s Department accountable. These acts are not happening to other people and they are not anecdotal one-offs. This is real and it is happening every day. I am proud of my firm and proud to be making a difference. I am also grateful for the Justices on the California Supreme Court and the unanimous and thoughtful decision they rendered. The Opinion is 65 pages long, but NBC and other news outlets have run the story.

The California Supreme Court published an opinion Monday that restored an $8-million jury award to the children of a man who died after struggling with LA County Sheriff’s deputies in Compton in 2012. Darren Burley died 10 days after deputies struck him in the head with flashlights, shocked him wi...
