Your teenager got a ticket. What does that mean for their license?

In Connecticut, a ticket or motor vehicle charge can put your teenager’s license, insurance rates, driving record, and court status at risk.

Swipe through for five things parents and teen drivers should understand:

1. A ticket can lead to suspension
Some violations can trigger DMV consequences, even if the ticket seems minor at first.

2. The type of offense matters
Non-criminal infractions may involve fines or points. Criminal motor vehicle charges can involve court, a record, or possible jail time.

3. A DUI can trigger two separate cases
A teen may face consequences through criminal court and a separate DMV process.

4. Some offenses carry automatic consequences
Reckless driving, evading responsibility, and driving while suspended can put a license at risk quickly.

5. Teen drivers can face adult court
Motor vehicle crimes involving juveniles are handled in adult criminal court in Connecticut.

When your teen’s license is at risk, get legal guidance before deciding how to handle the ticket or charge.

At Willinger, Willinger & Bucci, our attorneys represent families across Connecticut in teen driver matters, including license suspensions, DUI charges, traffic tickets, and related motor vehicle offenses.

Paying a zoning invoice without verifying it first could cost you thousands. So could paying your teenager's traffic ticket.

These are the legal issues Connecticut homeowners, families, and businesses can't afford to ignore this May.

🚨 Zoning Scam Alert
Fraudsters are sending fake municipal invoices to Connecticut zoning applicants. One unverified payment could cost you thousands. Know what to check before you pay.

🏡 Buying or Selling a Home?
Signing a contract without understanding disclosure requirements is a risk no buyer or seller should take. Property condition, lead paint, mold, and foundation issues all carry legal weight before closing.

⚖️ Business Disputes
By the time a judgment is entered, assets can be gone. A prejudgment remedy can help secure what's owed — but timing and strategy are everything.

🚗 Teen Drivers
A traffic ticket can feel minor. For drivers under 18, it can trigger an automatic license suspension. Don't pay it without understanding what's at stake.

🏠 Making an Over-Ask Offer?
Winning a bidding war feels good — until the appraisal comes in low. Over-ask offers can create serious financing and deposit risks if the contract isn't structured carefully.

LEGAL QUESTION OF THE WEEK

“If I get a speeding ticket in another state, will it impact my Connecticut driver’s license?”

Short answer: Likely, yes.

Many Connecticut drivers assume that if they receive a speeding ticket while traveling in another state, the violation will only matter there. In many cases, that is not true.

Connecticut participates in an interstate compact with most other states. Under this system, state motor vehicle departments exchange information about traffic violations. If you receive a speeding ticket or other moving violation outside of Connecticut, that information may be reported back to the Connecticut DMV.

What this could mean for your Connecticut license:
❌ Points may be reported to your Connecticut driving record
❌ Your license status could be affected
❌ Your insurance premiums may increase
❌ Ignoring the ticket could create additional penalties or complications

What you should do instead:
✅ Do not ignore the ticket – Failing to respond can make the situation worse.
✅ Understand how the violation may transfer – An out-of-state ticket may still affect your Connecticut license.
✅ Be careful before simply paying the fine – Paying may have consequences for your driving record.
✅ Speak with an attorney if you are unsure – Legal guidance can help you understand your options and protect your record.

A speeding ticket outside of Connecticut can still follow you home. Before you pay or ignore it, make sure you understand how it may affect your license, insurance, and driving record.

A teen driver’s ticket can affect their license, insurance rates, driving record, and ability to drive.

These are the traffic issues teen drivers and parents in Connecticut should understand before paying a ticket or resolving a charge:

🔹 Some tickets can lead to suspension - Certain violations can trigger DMV consequences, including a mandatory license suspension.

🔹 The suspension may come later - A teen driver may resolve the ticket first, then receive a DMV suspension notice weeks later.

🔹 The type of charge matters - Reckless driving, DUI, and other serious offenses can lead to court penalties and separate DMV action.

🔹 Points can add up - Repeated violations, point accumulation, or missed retraining requirements can put a teen driver’s license at risk.

🔹 How the ticket is handled matters - Paying or resolving a ticket without understanding the consequences can create problems after the case appears to be over.

Attorney Chris DeMatteo explains how common driving mistakes can lead to license suspension, and what teen drivers and parents should know before taking the next step: https://www.wwblaw.com/a-legal-guide-for-teens-tickets-license-suspensions-and-avoiding-trouble/

If your teen is facing a ticket or charge, get legal guidance so you understand what is at risk, what deadlines apply, and what could affect their license or driving record.

Buying or selling a home in Connecticut? Your real estate contract can affect your deposit, your right to cancel, and your closing date.

We break down five terms to understand before you sign:

→ Property description - Confirms the legal boundaries, land record details, and what is actually being transferred.

→ Deposit - Explains how much you are paying upfront, when it is due, and when it may be at risk.

→ Contingencies - Protect your right to cancel for issues involving financing, appraisal, inspections, title, or municipal searches, but only if deadlines are met.

→ Default - Explains what can happen if the buyer or seller does not meet the contract terms.

→ Closing date - Sets the timeline for transferring title. If time is “of the essence,” missing the date can lead to penalties.

Before you sign, make sure you understand the terms that could affect your money, your timeline, and your ability to move forward or walk away.

Legal Question of the Week 📝

Does Having a Last Will and Testament Mean Your Estate Avoids Probate?

The short answer: Not always. ⚖️

Many people assume that having a Will means their estate will automatically avoid probate, but that is not always the case.

If you pass away with assets titled in your name alone, the probate court may still need to be involved. Probate is the legal process of transferring assets from your estate to the people you named to receive them.

A Will can help by:

✅ Stating who should receive your property
✅ Naming the person responsible for handling your estate
✅ Providing guidance through the probate process
✅ Helping reduce confusion among loved ones

However, a Will does not always:

🔹 Avoid probate
🔹 Automatically retitle assets
🔹 Keep the court out of the process
🔹 Transfer singly-owned assets on its own

A Last Will and Testament is an important estate planning tool, but it is only one part of a complete estate plan.

Buying your first home in Connecticut? Your real estate attorney does more than show up at closing. They're involved from the moment you sign a contract — reviewing terms, flagging issues, and making sure your interests are protected every step of the way.

Here's what your attorney handles on your behalf:
✅ Purchase Contract - Real estate broker contracts cover the basics, but attorney-prepared contracts include additional protections tailored to your specific transaction. These provisions can save you thousands if something goes wrong.
✅ Contingencies - These are legal safeguards that ensure you can recover your deposit if key conditions aren't met—mortgage approval, inspection results, clear title, and more. Without proper contingencies, you're taking on unnecessary risk.
✅ Title & Municipal Searches - Your attorney conducts thorough searches to uncover liens, unpaid taxes, missing heirs, permit violations, zoning issues, and other surprises before they become your problem. This step alone can prevent catastrophic issues down the road.
✅ Mortgage Financing Coordination - Your attorney coordinates closing figures with your lender, making sure everything lines up seamlessly so there are no last-minute surprises or delays at the closing table.
✅ The Closing - Your attorney explains loan documents in plain language, oversees the transfer of funds, secures the deed in your name, and files everything with the town clerk—ensuring every legal requirement is met and your ownership is properly protected.

The bottom line: The right legal team doesn't just protect you—they make the entire home buying process smoother, working hand-in-hand with your real estate agent and lender to get you to ownership with confidence and peace of mind.

Signing a real estate contract before you understand the terms can put your deposit, closing date, and ability to walk away at risk.

These are 5 real estate terms buyers and sellers in Connecticut should understand before signing:

1️⃣ Deposit - Your contract should clearly state how much you are paying upfront, when it is due, and when the seller may be allowed to keep it.

2️⃣ Contingencies - Financing, inspection, appraisal, title, and municipal search contingencies can protect your right to cancel, but only if you meet the deadlines.

3️⃣ Property description - Your contract should make clear what is being sold, including legal boundaries, land record details, and what is actually being transferred.

4️⃣ Default - If you or the other party miss a required step, the buyer may lose the deposit or the seller may be required to complete the sale.

5️⃣ Closing date - If the contract says "time is of the essence,” missing the closing date can lead to penalties.

Attorney Katherine M. Macol explains the residential real estate contract terms buyers and sellers should understand before signing: https://www.wwblaw.com/residential-real-estate-contract-terms-defined/

Before you sign or move toward closing, get legal guidance so you understand what you are agreeing to, what deadlines apply, and what could put your deposit or transaction at risk.
