There are moments that change a community forever, and this is one of them.
Like so many others, I’ve struggled to find the words because there really aren’t any that seem big enough for a loss like this.
Our hearts are broken over the loss of Officer Scott Ries. Scott wasn’t just an officer—he was a husband, a father, a friend, a teammate, a hunter, and a genuinely kind soul. He proudly served our community and gave his life doing exactly what he had always committed himself to doing: answering the call to help others.
My husband and I went to school with Scott and Chris had the privilege of playing football with Scott, and like so many people who knew him, we remember him as a gentle, caring man who loved people as much as he loved the outdoors.
We were just talking with him at Cranstons not long ago—he spoke so proudly about his family and how much he enjoyed hunting in the outdoors.
This tragedy reaches far beyond one family. We continue to pray for Scott’s wife and daughters, for the young mother and daughter whose lives were also tragically lost, for the officers who were injured, and we’re thankful they are recovering. We are also grateful that K-9 Vic is home recovering.
Our town has always felt like one of those places where everyone knows everyone—a community many have lovingly called “Mayberry.” You never imagine something like this happening here. Yet here we are, grieving together, holding one another a little tighter, and being reminded just how precious life is.
Please keep the Ries family, everyone affected by this tragedy, our law enforcement officers, first responders, and our entire community in your prayers.🙏💔
