PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE EXEMPTION FILING EXTENDED TO JUNE 30 |

Senate Bill 940, sponsored by Senator Roger Victory (R- Hudsonville) extending the time frame to file a 2020 PRE until June 30th was signed into law on June 24th by Governor Whitmer. It is now Public Act 96 of 2020.

Over the past several weeks Michigan Realtors® worked with the Legislature and the Department of Treasury to allow additional time for buyers to file their Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) for 2020. With the traditional deadline expiring June 1st, the legislature and the Governor acted quickly to provide buyers with the greatest amount of certainty and allow local governments to make adjustments for the July property tax bill.

Realtors® should advise buyers that are closing or have closed, in the month of June to file their PRE before June 30th. The Michigan Department of Treasury has issued the following guidance to help local governments and homebuyers receive the PRE rate for their 2020 July tax bill.
