Think filing for bankruptcy automatically destroys your security clearance?

It's one of the biggest myths we hear from federal employees and military personnel. The reality is that ignoring unresolved debt problems can actually create a much greater security concern than taking proactive, legal steps to fix your finances. While every situation is different, filing for bankruptcy doesn't mean an automatic loss of your clearance.

If you’re a federal worker or contractor struggling with debt, don't let fear keep you from getting help. Visit the Bankruptcy Resource Center at QuinnPatton.com to see your options.

Falling behind on your mortgage payments?

Many homeowners don't realize that bankruptcy might provide real options when foreclosure is looming. Depending on your specific circumstances, filing may stop or delay foreclosure proceedings. This gives you crucial time to explore solutions and protect your property.

Waiting until the last minute often drastically reduces your options. If foreclosure is a concern, visit QuinnPatton.com to review our homeowner bankruptcy resources.

Is your business struggling with debt? Here is the question most owners ask too late.

Just because your business carries debt doesn't automatically mean you need to file for bankruptcy. Some businesses have other paths forward: they can close, restructure operations, negotiate debt, or sell assets without ever filing. The key is understanding your actual exposure before making a move that creates personal liability.

Know your options before making a decision. We created a Business Bankruptcy FAQ specifically for owners facing tough calls - find it at QuinnPatton.com.

Is money being taken directly out of your paycheck?

For a lot of hardworking professionals, wage garnishment is the moment they realize it's time to get legal help. What many people don't know is that filing for bankruptcy triggers a powerful legal mechanism called an "automatic stay." This stay can stop most collection activities in their tracks, including many wage garnishments.

The sooner you understand your legal options, the more choices you have to protect your paycheck. Get answers to your garnishment questions at our Bankruptcy Resource Center at QuinnPatton.com today.

"We can't do that, it's against company policy."

When an employee asks for a medical accommodation, defaulting to a blanket handbook rule isn’t just bad practice - in Maryland, it can be illegal.

Dropping off a doctor's note shouldn't be the end of the conversation. Under the ADA and Maryland state law, it’s actually the start of a mandatory dialogue known as the "interactive process."

Both sides have to come to the table:
- Employers must genuinely explore options rather than just saying no.
- Employees need to be collaborative and open to alternative solutions.

Swipe through for a quick breakdown of how this process should actually work, what Maryland's specific standard requires, and how both sides can protect themselves when the rules get gray.

The long weekend is over, and the sprint to Q4 has officially started. Which means it’s time to talk about the PTO tidal wave coming your way in December.

Maryland law does not require employers to offer paid vacation time. But here is the catch: if you do offer it, and your employee handbook doesn't explicitly state what happens to unused time at the end of the year, Maryland law generally treats that accrued, unused PTO like earned wages. That means if an employee leaves, you have to pay it out—and if you want a "use it or lose it" policy for the end of the year, it must be clearly written and distributed to your team in advance.

The Takeaway:
If your policy is vague, Maryland will default to protecting the employee's earned time.

For Employees: Check your handbook today so you know exactly how much time you can carry over, and don't lose the rest you've earned.

For Employers: You have a few months before the end of the year. If your rollover policy is just an unwritten rule, now is the time to put it in writing before December 15th when half your staff requests the same two weeks off.

Not sure if your handbook’s PTO policy will hold up? That’s a quick conversation now, but a major headache later. Book a free consultation today so we can help you get it squared away: https://www.quinnpatton.com/book-online

Is it sexual harassment if a coworker asks you out?

Quinn Patton has represented a lot of people who have experienced sexual harassment. Sometimes it's clear cut (no you can't send naked pics and spanking is definitely out of the question). Other times it's nuanced.

Dating in the workplace is often at the heart of these legal questions. So, what do you think? Is asking someone out at work sexual harassment? Where would you draw the line?
