NEW WASHINGTON TAX CREDIT = EXTRA MONEY IN HAND

Some people living in Washington state can now apply for a new tax credit. The goal of the credit is to put hundreds back into the hands of low-to-moderate-income residents living here. It's called the Working Families Tax Credit and it's NEW!

The Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) was approved and funded by the state legislature in 2021. Applications for the program opened yesterday, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023.

The tax credit provides up to $300 for a single person, with an additional $300 for each qualifying child. There is a maximum of $1,200 available for eligible families with three or more children.

The WFTC amount is dependent on income and the number of children an applicant can claim.

The tax credit returns a portion of sales tax paid each year. It is expected to reach more than 400,000 households and benefit one in every three children in the state. Roughly 100,000 households in King County should qualify for the program, getting $54 million.

Washington State Department of Revenue (DOR) is in charge of managing the program.
