A proud moment! I was awarded the Oscar during my networking group meeting for best weekly commercial. My "commercial" was about how I had gone to the hospital to meet with an ill client to get his will and other Estate Planning documents signed. I was happy to be able to give him and his family the peace of mind of getting his affairs in order.

Just what is Estate Planning?

Estate planning is deciding what should happen with your money and your assets, and who would raise your minor children and take care of your pets in the event of your death or incapacity.

A comprehensive estate plan includes these documents:
- A will
- Possibly one or more trusts
- A financial power of attorney
- A healthcare power of attorney
- An advanced healthcare directive
- Guardian nominations for your minor children

What can go wrong if no estate planning is done?

- The Court will appoint guardians of your minor children, and your children could end up in protective custody until a guardian can be appointed
- The Court will appoint the agent to make healthcare decisions for you in case of your incapacity
- Your assets will pass pursuant to state law, not necessarily to who you want
- Minor children could get their inheritance outright at age 18
- Assets could get lost and end up in State Unclaimed Property ($1.4 trillion in Washington!)
