Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts The Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts publishes concise legal analysis for practicing attorneys.

The Journal collaborates with the Law, Technology & Arts Group (LTA), a new research program at the University of Washington School of Law. LTA was formed in 2009 when the University of Washington School of Law merged the Center for Advanced Study & Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP), the Shidler Center for Law, Commerce + Technology, and the Graduate Program in IP Law & Policy into a sing

le research unit. This new research group takes a comprehensive approach to the legal issues involving technological and artistic innovation. The Journal is a partnership between student editors, faculty, and an External Board comprised of faculty and practicing attorneys. This ensures the Journal publishes timely, relevant, and informative articles. The Journal began in 2004 as the Shidler Journal of Law, Commerce +Technology. The Shidler Journal was named after Bellingham native Roger Shidler, a founding member of the law firm Shidler McBroom & Gates. Roger Shidler was a pioneer in the area of technology law and innovation. In the following decades, Shidler, George McBroom, a former member of the University of Washington School of Law faculty, William H. Gates, Sr., Peter Lucas, and their partners built one of Seattle's most vibrant and influential law practices. The firm was known for its work in technology law and for prevailing in a lawsuit against the Washington Public Power Supply system, a case that became the largest federal securities litigation in the nation’s history. In 1990 the Shidler firm merged with Preston, Thorgrimson, Ellis & Holman, which became Preston Gates & Ellis LLP, and then K&L Gates LLP. Today K&L Gates LLP, has approximately 1,800 lawyers across three continents. The Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts is proud to carry on the tradition of excellence and innovation started by Roger Shidler.

As livestreamed worship becomes central to religious practice, existing copyright law and RFRA doctrine may no longer adequately capture its significance. Absent statutory updates, licensing requirements will likely remain enforceable despite their growing impact on digital services.

Artificial intelligence is quietly reshaping one of healthcare’s most foundational documents: the medical record. Ambient AI systems, such as Microsoft’s Nuance DAX, promise to reduce administrative burden and improve patient care, but they also raise questions about medical malpractice exposure.

As Gallium Nitride (GaN) reaches a commercial tipping point in 2026, traditional patent strategies are hitting a wall. This article explores how a recent administrative shift at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) offers a strategic exit for hardware developers and proposes a new "Technical De Minimis" standard to prevent a trademark gridlock.

Churches increasingly livestream services, but doing so with copyrighted worship music may fall outside the narrow § 110(3) exemption and expose them to liability. Until the law catches up with digital worship, licensing regimes remain the primary safeguard.

Title: The Rise of Fractional General Counsel in the Modern Legal Industry

Businesses are increasingly turning to fractional general counsel (experienced lawyers who provide part-time, flexible legal support) to balance cost, efficiency, and strategic guidance. This model allows companies, especially startups and growing businesses, to access high-level legal expertise without the expense of a full-time hire while integrating legal strategy into everyday operations. As legal needs grow more complex, this approach is reshaping how companies and lawyers work together.

Title: Art as a Tool to Process Trauma: A Framework for Repair and Reflection

Art therapy helps people process trauma by engaging the body, describing difficult experiences, and creating space for reflection when words fall short. Its benefits extend across the legal system, supporting youth in prevention programs, people currently incarcerated, and individuals reentering their communities. As research continues to affirm its effectiveness, art therapy offers a dignity-centered approach to healing for people across the criminal system.

Inigo Philbrick’s fraud illustrates the hidden risks faced by art-based financiers. UCC Article 9 presumes verifiable debtor ownership of loan collateral, but private transactions, fragmented ownership, and the absence of a central registry leave lenders exposed in art-backed financing.

In the wake of Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s deaths, the spread of AI-altered photos and videos intensified political polarization and reshaped how the public perceived them as victims. With the rise of AI rapidly outpacing legal restrictions or ramifications, well-intentioned Americans wanting to stay informed are left wondering where they can trust to get their news.
