Memorial Day was born from the strength, compassion, and devotion of women who chose to honor the fallen and ensure they would never be forgotten. Did you know that after the Civil War, women-led groups like the Ladies’ Memorial Associations began the tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and crosses—laying the foundation for what we now honor as Memorial Day.

Today, we also recognize the courage and sacrifice of the women who have served in every chapter of our nation’s military history. From nurses and support roles to combat service, female service members have answered the call with strength, skill, and valor.

This Memorial Day as we honor our fallen service members, let us also take pause to honor the women who helped create this legacy of remembrance and the women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Another history making moment for NASA astronaut Christina Koch, aka “the zero-gravity gun show” … a nickname she earned when a photo of her impressive strength while in space went viral. As the only female member of the Artemis II crew aboard the Orion spacecraft, Koch became the first woman to travel beyond low Earth orbit and journey around the Moon. She is part of a team of four that successfully guided the spacecraft through its lunar flyby and traveled the furthest from Earth. 

Her groundbreaking achievements don’t end there. During the mission, she participated in the first-ever moonship-to-spaceship radio call. From 230,000 miles away, Christina reconnected with her “astro-sister” Jessica Meir aboard the International Space Station. The two made history together in 2019 during the first all-female spacewalk, and their reunion over the airwaves marked another milestone for women and humanity.
