The Meryhew Law Group, PLLC

The Meryhew Law Group, PLLC When someone is charged with a crime so serious it can change the course of their life, a general practice attorney is not the answer.

The Meryhew Law Group has closed it’s doors after more than two decades leading the way in Washington to improve the defense and treatment of persons accused of s*xual misconduct. When it affects your family the problem only becomes more complex. The Meryhew Law Group, PLLC is not a "jack-of-all-trades" criminal defense law firm. Instead, we have chosen to focus our skills and efforts on the crim

es, laws and defenses we know best: s*x crimes and domestic violence defense, and family law involving these kinds of allegations. Our four attorneys work together as a team on these complex and challenging cases every day with proven results. At The Meryhew Law Group we pride ourselves on practicing law in a way that demands an ethic of care and heightened interpersonal skills, and in a way that values and benefits the psychological well-being of our clients as well as their legal rights and interests. We seek to actively prevent future legal problems by directly addressing the issues that lead to the problem in the first place. We are very experienced in all types of creative solutions to achieve the best outcomes for our clients, including various types of counseling and treatment. In 2008 Brad was appointed to the Washington S*x Offender Policy Board and has been active in developing policy recommendations which have been adopted by the Legislature in regards to s*x offender management. He also speaks regularly at conferences and trainings regarding s*x offense defense and policy. In 2010 Norm Partington joined The Meryhew Law Group to work on s*x offense defense, petitions to remove the requirement of s*x offender registration and domestic violence cases. Adam Shapiro also joined the firm in 2010, focusing his practice on family law, CPS investigations and dependency cases. We are three lawyers with a broad range of skills who work together as a team to ensure that our clients receive the best representation we can provide. We are committed to excellence in our practice, and to advocating for our clients in the courtroom, in the Legislature, and wherever we can find an opportunity to address these important issues. Check us out if you know someone who is in the fight of their lives---that is what we do. Our Office Manager is Danica Wettland. Our Paralegal is Alissa Henderson. Give us a call if you think we can help you, a colleague, a family member or a friend.

I’m happy to share that after almost 30 years as a criminal defense attorney I have closed my office and am now focused on new adventures. I continue to Chair the Washington S*x Offender Policy Board and to speak on issues related to public policy and the s*x offense management system.

My primary focus now is renovating my garden and some writing projects. Stay tuned for new adventures as we figure out this retirement thing.

I’m honored to announce that I have been unanimously elected to a third two year term as Chair of the Washington S*x Offender Policy Board. We have accomplished a lot in the last few years. Our biggest accomplishment has been recommending changes to the juvenile s*x offender registration rules to remove most juveniles from the rolls. The Legislature agreed and in recent months over 2,500 individuals convicted in juvenile court have seen this onerous and crippling duty extinguished!

In 2008, the legislature passed SSB 6596 to create the S*x Offender Policy Board (SOPB). The Legislature's intent was to promote a coordinated and integrated response to s*x offender management and create an entity to respond to issues that arise, such as integrating state and federal laws in a way....

Brad Meryhew was recently re-elected to a second two year term as Chair of the Washington S*x Offender Policy Board. He has served on this Board since 2008 representing the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Washington Defender Association. In the next year they have been asked to make recommendations to the Washington Legislature regarding lifetime supervision for certain s*x offenders, sentencing alternatives for non-contact s*x offenses and failure to register prosecution reforms.

Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5891 (ESSB 5891) established the board to advise the governor and legislature on issues related to s*x offender management. The board may be convened to: Conduct case reviews of s*x offense incidents Carry out projects on issues related to s*x offender policy Members...

Please be careful out there. We get calls in our office every week from victims and potential victims of these extortion attempts. Sometimes they claim to be law enforcement and ask you to pay the father of the poor child (fake) who claims you talked dirty to them. Be smart. Don’t pay these guys. Call us if you have questions.

The FBI reports an increase in s*xtortion scams recently where crooks demand payment to not leak sensitive images or information about a victim.

COVID-19 Lock Down Update.
The Meryhew Law Group will remain sort of open during the next two weeks while the Governor has asked everyone to shelter in place to the extent possible. We have clients in jail who need ongoing services and other clients whose cases we need to continue to new court dates. Today we are working to get clients out of the Work Release facility and home where they will be safer. These services are essential to our clietns.

The list of essential services includes:

“Professional services, such as legal or accounting and tax preparation services, when necessary to assist in compliance with legally mandated activities and critical sector services.”

Critical sector services means the courts and the jails according to the guidelines.

All client meetings will be over the phone. Social distancing will be enforced. Jim is wiping every surface throughout the day. We are keeping staff home. But we can’t just suspend serving our client’s needs.

Stay safe. Be smart. Relax. Repeat.

I got a not guilty today in King County Superior Court after a three week trial. Our client was acquitted of very serious charges and is now with his family planning the rest of his life. Feeling grateful, proud and determined. I love my work.
