I’m off to see the Wizard. Of Oz. At the Sphere, a cutting-edge venue in Vegas. At night, its exterior is a mesmerizing light show. (Impressive in daylight, too). Inside, a Radio City Music Hall motif. That’s a temporary look, as it turned out to be a projection! Replaced by the movie, showing on a massive screen practically fully surrounding you, even over your head! It’s an immersive experience… during the tornado, seats shake and wind machines blow fake leaves through the theater. In the enchanted orchard scene, plushie apples fall from the sky! Very, very fun experience!

And now, Dublin! 1) The Famous Temple Bar and Temple Bar neighborhood. Note the venue across the street: Crowbar… fun fact: before the crowbar was invented, crows had to drink at home! 2) A linguistic renaissance… signs everywhere are in Gaelic as well as English 3) the Irish version of London’s red phone booths 4-5) Dublin is amazingly musical… live street performers every few blocks, and live bands in many pubs, 6) Trinity College, home to the famed illuminated manuscript The Book of Kells. 1) Pro tip in Paris: when asking directions to the underground transit, make sure to specify “Metro,” or you could be directed here! 2) entrance to Derriere, an outstanding restaurant in the Marais neighborhood, 3) the Eiffel, seen from the deck where I’m staying, 4) and 5) City Hall, and just an interesting building… of so many, many interesting buildings!

A few snaps from the south of France…1) navigating through a goat herd on a skinny road en route to tiny villages; 2) a village, of maybe 20-40 homes; 3) crystal clear stream we stopped by to spread a picnic lunch; 4) shopping the street market in Sault… the store in the background has been there, in the same family, since 1887!; 4) overall view of one of the valleys. Far from pollution, the air is crisp and clean and the colors vibrant… no wonder artists are drawn to this region.

1) I don’t know why the monarchy has such trouble finding and keeping quality guards, because they keep changing them 4 times a week! Pro tip: if you want an unobstructed view, get there by 9:30 for a 10:30 start (Sun, Mon, Wed, Fri), because… 2) thousands upon thousands show up trying to get a glimpse! 3) from the outside, the British Museum is rather understated, but inside… 4) the Grand Court is awfully impressive! 5) part of the Elghin Marbles, taken from Greece’s Parthenon, and yes, Greece is still pretty upset over it! 6) the Rosetta Stone! I’m a little on my hieroglyphs, but I think this may be predicting the creation, around 2016, of TikTok!!

1) Harrod’s department store, the famed siren call for shoppers worldwide! 2) This bottle of Louis XIII cognac comes in a Baccarat crystal decanter with a label inscribed in 14K gold, offered for sale at $35,000 (US dollars). Not a typo: $35,000. The clerk assured me they sell “a lot” of them on a regular basis! 3) if you’ve tried breakfast at Tiffany’s, how can you resist brunch at Harrod’s? Try the braffles, waffles created from brioche. 4) food stalls have workers everywhere putting on a show while preparing the offerings. Here, the chocolatiers ply their magic. 5) and 6) The real treasures are those found in nature, a few blocks away in Hyde Park.

Day trip to Bath and the Cotswolds, aboard The English Bus (highly recommend, small-group — 16, max — with charming, knowledgeable guide). Bath dates to Roman times, and the ruins of the old baths remain. Look for the Cornish Bakery on the plaza behind the Abbey, and try a pasty (like a calzone, but way better). On to one of the villages in the Cotswolds… so bucolic, you’ll think you’re on a movie set!

When you misplace your watch and need to tell time using just a 5,000-year-old mysterious sun dial… there’s just one place to go: Stonehenge!
