As we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we wanted to share that the NW Collaborative Futures Conference (online Oct 21 + 22)will include an extraordinary range of Indigenous speakers.

The conference will kick-off with a free Wednesday evening reception/mingle and special presentation from Yukon-born actor Tahmoh Penikett (of the Tanana people) and close with a free Friday night mini film fest that includes a showing of “Older Than The Crown” and Q&A with Native American filmmaker, Derrick LaMere

During the conference:
Dr. Marianne Ignace will share Secwepemc history and protocols around land as we consider how we think about borders

Chief Judge Abby Abinanti of the Yurok Tribal Court will join The Honourable Marion Buller in a discussion of the intersection of legal jurisdiction and Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit Persons

Shelly Boyd a member tofhe Sinixt/Arrow Lake band of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation will discuss the Sinixt people’s legal fight for recognition in Canada

Wet’suwe’ten mediator Julie Daum will join with artist and writer Alina Pete of the Little Pine First Nation in discussing the arts generally, and Indigenous Horror specifically, as an opportunity for learning and empathy

Former Yukon premier Tony Penikett will speak about the challenges in building understanding around treaties and also the ongoing work of bringing together polar communities, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, for collaborative action on climate change

We are thrilled to welcome Tahmoh Penikett as conference keynote speaker at the NorthWest Collaborative Futures Conference. Tahmoh will be speaking at the free kickoff session Wednesday evening to share reflections on his own experiences with the impacts of artificial borders and to stimulate reflection and conversation.

Tahmoh Penikett is an actor especially recognized for his roles in many genre TV series. Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, Tahmoh has strong ties to the Upper Tanana tribe, their traditions and their love of storytelling. He also has a strong connection and is extremely devoted to his family with whom he spends time whenever possible.

Before landing his role on the award-winning Battlestar Galactica as Karl ‘Helo’ Agathon, Tahmoh starred in the final season of the critically acclaimed Canadian series The Cold Squad. His performance on that series earned him a LEO Award nomination. He was also nominated for a LEO for his lead role in the miniseries Riverworld for Syfy. After Battlestar Galactica, Tahmoh starred in Dollhouse (created by Joss Whedon). He has guest-starred on a variety of series, including recurring Guest roles on such shows as Taken, Altered Carbon, Castle, Supernatural, Strange Empire, The Killing, Bomb Girls, and Incorporated. He starred with Diane Neal on the MOW Practice to Deceive for Lifetime.

NW Collaborative Futures (a cross-border, future focused, conflict resolution conference occuring online Oct 21-22), is thrilled to announce our Wednesday evening Oct 20 kickoff events, open to everyone for free, regardless of conference registration.

At 6pm, we’ll start with a virtual reception as Mediate BC board chair Julie Daum presents the Susanna Jani Award for Excellence in Mediation. Then we’ll mingle via breakout rooms.

Professionals know the value in being both a mentor and a mentee. But are there barriers to your mentorship experience? Join Georgina Delimari, Julie Daum, Vivian Kerenyi and Wendy Lakusta at the Northwest Collaborative Futures Conference for their session on mentorship.

Mentors must acknowledge that there is a border between them and their mentees. They have experience. And while they both have skills, mentees are further developing them and may lack the confidence to break down the wall. So, a mentor must be aware of the power imbalance and work through difficulties to elevate the learning experience for both the mentor and mentee.

Come watch a video with tools and tips and engage in a thoughtful discussion about mentoring and the value of deconstructing the artificial border between participants.

As dispute resolution professionals, we may have dabbled in providing our services remotely. But for many, this past year and a half has been a new frontier. In this session with Kellie Tennant and Lori Frank, learn how to overcome the obstacles that remote practice may present while also harnessing the positives for both the professional and client. Tips and suggestions for effective use of remote tools will be offered to help you navigate issues such as working with adversity, managing the emotional climate and supporting clients remotely. As well, we’ll take a look at the future of virtual practice in a post-COVID world.

We are pleased to welcome Alice Shikina and James Cook for a presentation on workplace conflict for the Northwest Collaborative Futures Conference.

Mediation is all about tearing down walls and building up communication. People build fortresses around themselves at work, stop all conducive conversations and begin to build an empire of conflict. The biggest complaint is that people are not being heard or understood. Most workplace conflicts do not belong in the courts. They need to be deconstructed, understood and rebuilt on healthier relationships.

James Cook and Alice Shikina will discuss the nature of conflict in the workplace and the ways to deal with larger organizational turmoil and how to deconstruct those walls in order to begin to build bridges.

COVID-19 has disrupted the traditional methods used by legal service providers to connect low income and marginalized clients with legal services.
