Does an international adoptee need Certificate of Citizenship if they already have a passport?

YES!

Passports expire. Certificates of Citizenship do not. If the passport expires, you need the CoC to renew it. The passport also does not change the adoptee's status from "legal permanent resident" to "citizen" in the USCIS or SSA databases. A CoC does. Furthermore, in the current political climate, anyone born outside the US should have access to all available means of demonstrating their citizenship. There is no reason NOT to get a CoC if you haven't already: they are FREE for adoptees, and you can request them from USCIS via the N-600 form: https://www.uscis.gov/n-600.

• navigating the school systems and supports in Washington State

• the developmental effects of early drug exposure as well as subtle symptoms of fetal alcohol spectrum that can have profound effects on learning

Working with Schools

What can you do to make sure your child is getting the support they need at school?

Arik Korman, AFFGS Dad and CEO of League of Education Voters Foundation, starts off our AFFGS Educational Series. He will address why adopted kids are more likely to need educational supports, offer LOTS of information about how parents can advocate and access those supports (and what to do when schools/staff aren't complying), and share his specific story about advocating for his son.

What’s going on with YOUR child?

Behavior and school struggles: Considering symptoms of prenatal exposures and getting help

Wonderland Child & Family Services supports children with developmental delays, disabilities, and prenatal substance abuse. They will talk about prenatal exposures to both drugs and alcohol, what to be looking out for as kids get older, and how it affects children’s overall development.

Some experts are suggesting that up to 80% of adopted children experienced some level of prenatal alcohol exposure, and that even a small amount can have lifelong impacts. Unrecognized and untreated symptoms from fetal alcohol spectrum can increase learning struggles, behavior challenges, and make both school and family life extra hard.

We as adoptive parents are educated about the large scale impacts of prenatal exposures. And, if your child is struggling with learning issues or behavior challenges, taking a peek into the subtle effects of mild alcohol exposure may be the key to helping you understand and support your child. Please join us for this important conversation.

A note from Janna Annest:

-----------------------------------------------
I had the coolest thing happen today. One of Seattle's best theaters (ACT) asked me to talk with the cast and director of their upcoming production, "Wolf Play." It's a show about adoption, and they wanted to learn about the legal issues affecting the story.

I ❤️ theater and can talk about adoption until your ears fall off, so this was pretty much my dream morning. I had a script in one hand and a statute in the other. 🎭🤓

Information about the play is below, as well as some discount codes if you are interested in seeing it (especially on May 16, when I'm joining the after-play discussion)!

To my friends in the adoption community: this is a difficult show to watch. It's smart and funny and educational and well worth seeing, but it's also about a six-year-old Korean boy who is re-homed by his adoptive parents. That's a gut punch for anyone. For someone with specific personal experiences . . . I think it could knock them out. Just be aware.
-------------------
Wolf Play is a touching, funny, and unique story about a South Korean boy who is adopted first by an American couple and then rehomed to a q***r family - and a messy legal struggle that ensues when the first adoptive father decides he wants the kid back rather than have him raised by two moms. It's a wonderful look at family and belonging, and amplifies the power of theater to expand our collective capacity for empathy.
