Our client Scot McLeod spent the early part of his career cleaning up hazardous job sites, protecting others from the dangers of asbestos. Late last week, a King County jury awarded him $20.9 million following a terminal mesothelioma diagnosis caused not by his own direct work, but by the negligence of the very sites he was hired to clean up.

Scot's diagnosis was not the result of his direct abatement activities. He followed proper protocols during his six-year tenure, beginning in 1989. It was the result of negligence.

Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company — the mill long known as the source of the "aroma of Tacoma" — had allowed asbestos-containing materials outside of containment areas to become damaged, deteriorated, and friable, contaminating the broader environment where Scot and others worked every day.

After a 3-week trial, the jury returned a $20.9 million verdict in his favor, recognizing the harm caused by a company that failed to maintain a safe environment for the workers on its premises.

We were honored to stand beside Scot and his family throughout this fight. Colin Mieling, Kaitlin Cherf, Craig Sims, and our incredible support staff were all instrumental in obtaining justice and this outcome for the McLeod family.

As women continue to speak out against Tri-Cities OB-GYN Dr. Mark Mulholland, recent reporting from ProPublica and KUOW highlights survivor stories and examines the Washington Medical Commission’s response to decades of complaints.

The investigation found that complaints went unaddressed for years, allowing Dr. Mulholland to continue practicing.

SGB’s Elizabeth Hanley and colleagues represent over 100 patients who suffered abuse by Dr. Mulholland.

We commend the survivors who have courageously come forward. If you or someone you know may have been abused by Dr. Mulholland, please reach out to SGB today to learn more about your rights.

SGB attorneys Sergio Garcidueñas-Sease and Colin Mieling recently joined a Judicial Institute panel as leaders of their respective Judicial Evaluations Committees (JEC) – Sergio representing Latina/o Bar Association of Washington and Colin representing the King County Bar Association.

Alongside representatives from several minority bar associations, they helped inform judicial candidates about JEC processes and provided feedback through mock interviews.

We're proud to support Sergio and Colin’s efforts to strengthen the bench!

A Multnomah County jury issued a record $29 million verdict against the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) for its failure to respond to a child abuse hotline call, which ultimately led to catastrophic harm to a then two-year-old child, causing a severe traumatic brain injury and quadriplegia.

SGB attorneys Becky Roe and Chen-Chen Jiang, along with co-counsel Scott Kocher of Forum Law Group, represented the child, who now cannot walk, speak, or use his arms and requires a feeding tube for nourishment.

The verdict includes $12.5 million to cover the child’s lifelong medical needs, and sends a clear message about the importance of accountability when institutions fail to protect vulnerable children.

During Brain Injury Awareness Month, we’re focusing on the profound impact traumatic brain injuries can have on survivors and their families.

SGB attorney Sims Weymuller recently represented a family whose middle school student suffered a serious traumatic brain injury during a school track-and-field event after system-wide failures caused a school district to ignore the most basic safety protocols.

The case resulted in a recovery of over $8.5 million, helping ensure the injured student has access to the care and resources needed for the future.

Cases like this underscore the importance of accountability and awareness. SGB remains committed to standing with traumatic brain injury survivors and advocating for safer systems that protect our communities.

The SGB team was proud to take part in the 33rd annual Latina/o Bar Association of Washington Gala, an evening celebrating leadership, community, and the continued advancement of Latina/o representation in the legal profession.

This year’s theme, “Together We Rise / Juntos Ascendemos,” highlighted the collective strength of attorneys, judges, students, and allies working to expand opportunity, amplify voices, and strengthen impact across the legal community.

During the program, SGB attorney Diego Rondon Ichikawa introduced keynote speaker Justice Mary Yu (Ret.), and the evening concluded with Sergio Garcidueñas-Sease delivering closing remarks before being introduced as LBAW’s new president.

Congratulations to Sergio on stepping into this important leadership role. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of his work with LBAW and the broader legal community.

Recreational injury cases often come with complex factual and legal challenges. Grit, determination, and creative lawyering are needed to drive successful case outcomes.

SGB’s Carson Phillips-Spotts explores this topic in his latest Washington State Bar Association Bar News article, “Creative Recreation: Recreational Injury Cases Present Unique Challenges.”

He examines the diverse legal issues that arise in these cases—like pre-injury waivers and affirmative defenses—and breaks down the strategic considerations attorneys must keep in mind when evaluating and litigating these cases.

SGB attorney Kaitlin Cherf was recently featured in Law360 discussing a landmark Washington Supreme Court ruling that allows families to move forward with civil claims against Amazon over the promotion and sale of high-concentration sodium nitrite used in youth su***des.

In her comments, Kaitlin explains how the decision reflects an evolving understanding of su***de and mental health, rejecting outdated legal doctrines that once treated su***de as a voluntary act that automatically cut off tort liability. The ruling recognizes the realities of vulnerable young people online and the role powerful platforms play in shaping their choices.

This decision is an important step toward holding e-commerce giants to the same basic safety obligations as brick-and-mortar sellers and ensuring that vulnerable users are not left without recourse when platforms ignore clear warning signs. Families harmed by dangerous products sold and promoted online deserve meaningful access to the justice system and a chance to be heard.

Kaitlin represents the family of 15-year-old Tyler Schmidt, whose death helped inspire “Tyler’s Law,” Washington legislation limiting access to high-concentration sodium nitrite and better protecting youth from this lethal chemical.
