Maren is thankful for the opportunity to comment in this important story. If it’s really true that all of our taxes will go up if victims of governmental s*xual abuse can seek compensation, then the government needs to do better in not employing s*xual predators. “It’s hard to find good help” is not an excuse for keeping a red-flagged employee on the government payroll.

State senators have introduced bills to let Nebraskans more easily sue the state in cases like the s*xual abuse at Kearney’s YRTC. They passed one bill targeting child abuse in schools, but Gov. Jim Pillen vetoed it. The state’s top court has also made it tougher to sue.

What a great way to kick off the 25th annual presentation of Theatre West’s Broadway in the Bluffs fundraiser event last week: the energy and talents of four gifted Theatre West alums, combining for this big piece of music from Hamilton. Maren was thankful for the opportunity to play the piano and serve as music director for talented actors like Joey Taylor, Debby Wagner, Stephanie Coley and Ty Corr (and Deanna Gorenson, Bell Island, Tom O’Brien, Lauren Newell, Patrick Newell, Zach Durbin, Tim Hebbert, Aaron Bahmer, Erin Jespersen and Ezdan “The Bread Doctor” Fluckiger) in their exceptional performances!

Hooray for Riley, whose girls basketball team won the Scottsbluff-Gering Lions Club tournament championship this weekend! Riley is a great example of what a coach should be: motivating his players, teaching them skills and strategy and helping them build confidence that working together, they can succeed.

Chaloupka Law LLC is a huge fan of Mr. Largo! Mr. Largo was Maren’s history teacher in 1986-88, and he is still teaching today. Mr. Largo is still pushing students to work hard, to open their minds, to find support for their positions and to speak with confidence in that support. Hey Scottsbluff Schools, how about presenting a Gary Largo Lecture Series to raise money for the Scottsbluff Public Schools Foundation? We adults need good history teachers too …

Today's Movie Themed Winter Royalty Pep Rally included the Teacher Oscars where Mr. Largo received the Oscar for "Least Likely to Retire". He had a very long acceptance speech! 🐾🎥

Maren and Riley joke that as a working team, they are stuck with each other, because no one else would put up with either one of them. They got officially stuck with each other 19 years ago today, when Riley was so focused on finding a job with health insurance that it didn’t occur to him that working with Maren would be a daily challenge to his constitutional patience. In the 19 years since then, Riley has been a gift and a blessing to so many people: to clients, who come to our practice in grief, shock and pain, and who receive Riley’s kindness and understanding; to the co-counsel, opposing counsel and judges with whom Riley communicates with clarity and professionalism; and to Maren, who straight-up could not do this extremely difficult work without Riley.

Thank you, Riley, for all you do for Chaloupka Law’s clients and for your ongoing endurance of Maren’s many eccentricities – for always keeping your “eyes on the prize” of obtaining justice for people in need.
