When we recruited Kevin Briggs of Briggs Bail Bond Services to serve as a U-CAN mentor, his first reaction was reluctance to get involved with “liberal BS.” Now he says, “ I didn’t realize how stern Judge Andra Ackerman can be.”
U-CAN is not some la-di-da hug-a-thug deal. It combines compassion with accountability.
Judge Ackerman keeps the participants on a short leash, and there is ALWAYS a measured consequence for violating any of her directives. As she explains to mentees, we provide a ladder, but they have to climb it.
LorDell, with the dedicated mentoring of Kevin Briggs, did just that.
On Friday, a young man who one year ago was staring straight in the face of a state prison term and the scarlet letter of a felony record, graduated from U-CAN and walked out of court with confidence and maturity and a positive role model: Kevin Briggs.
Congratulations, LorDell, you EARNED it. And thank you, Kevin, for helping a young man find his way.
