In 2012, Gunn Meyerhoff Shay helped Benedictine Military School shape a 20-Year Master Plan, laying the groundwork for a bold future. Phase 1 became a reality in 2016 with the groundbreaking of the new STEM Wing, now home to cutting-edge science labs, math and computer classrooms, a lecture hall, and a bright central atrium. Designed and built while the school remained in session, this project marked the first step in transforming the campus.

Welcoming over 12 million travelers a year, the Savannah Visitor Center and History Museum is one of the city’s most iconic stops. Originally an abandoned train station, it was transformed by Gunn Meyerhoff Shay in 1974, and again 20 years later, into the vibrant hub it is today. A timeless gateway to Savannah’s rich history and Southern charm.

Take a look at the construction progress at the mass timber hotel designed by GMSHAY! This building is located in one of the original six squares of James Oglethorpe’s urban plan. It was intentionally designed using inspiration from the surrounding architecture. The hotel will be made with structural mass timber, and have skin of cast stone and brick masonry.

The Live Oak Public Library's Carnegie Library is a cornerstone of history, education, and empowerment 📚✨

Built in 1914 by the Savannah Colored Library Association, the Carnegie Library at 537 East Henry Street was the first library in Savannah dedicated to serving the city’s African American community—and remains a powerful symbol of access and advancement. Originally designed by architect Julian deBruyn Kops in the Prairie style, it’s the only known example of its kind in Savannah. The library became a vital space for learning and gathering during segregation, and has continued to provide a space for advancing literacy in our community through today. We are thrilled to officially begin construction to refresh this resource and a repository for African American literature and history in Savannah. More than a building, the Carnegie Library is a lasting reminder that knowledge is power—and that inclusive design can shape a brighter future for all.

Reimagining a coastal community cornerstone with ULI 🌴🏛️

GMSHAY recently led a design exercise as part of a ULI Atlanta Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) focused on Memorial Park in the heart of Tybee Island.

In partnership with the City of Tybee, the panel explored creative strategies with the community to activate this underutilized public space and transform it into a vibrant, inclusive community hub. The team evaluated ways to enhance accessibility, usability, and long-term resilience—while also planning for a new evacuation shelter to support the island’s emergency preparedness needs. Through deep collaboration with local stakeholders, the TAP to delivered practical, forward-thinking recommendations for how Memorial Park can better serve Tybee’s residents and visitors for years to come.
