Most people think leverage means one thing:
Money.
Power.
Aggression.
A better lawyer.
But leverage is far more nuanced than that.
In fact, there are many different kinds of leverage.
And once you understand them, you stop feeling powerless very quickly.
Here are just a few.
1. Temporal Leverage
This is timing.
Who needs something faster?
Who has a deadline?
Who is under pressure right now?
For example:
If the other side needs a deal done before:
• a hearing
• a business closing
• an audit
• a public event
• a financial deadline
that’s leverage.
Most people reveal their urgency accidentally.
The people who win identify urgency and use it strategically.
2. Emotional Leverage
This is not about manipulation.
It’s about understanding emotional drivers.
High-conflict people are often driven by:
• ego
• image
• validation
• fear of exposure
• fear of losing control
That’s why phrases like:
“I see your point.”
or
“You’re good at coming up with solutions.”
can be so effective.
You lower resistance.
And when resistance drops, people reveal information.
That’s leverage.
3. Influence Leverage
This is perception.
Who does the judge believe?
Who looks organized?
Who appears calm and credible?
Influence leverage is built through:
• consistency
• professionalism
• structure
• documentation
• controlled communication
Most people don’t realize this until it’s too late.
Perception drives outcomes.
4. Informational Leverage
This is one of the most powerful forms of leverage.
Who has:
• the timeline
• the records
• the contradictions
• the documented pattern
A single incident means very little.
A structured pattern changes everything.
Patterns = power.
5. Technology Leverage
This is where most people are falling behind.
Technology leverage means using systems to:
• organize information
• track incidents
• identify patterns
• build timelines
• create summaries quickly
Because the reality is:
most people do not have time to manually manage all of this.
You have:
• a business
• a career
• kids
• responsibilities
And high-conflict situations can start feeling like a second full-time job.
Technology leverage changes that.
Why This Matters
Most people negotiate emotionally.
The people who win understand leverage structurally.
Once you can identify:
• pressure
• timing
• incentives
• patterns
the entire situation changes.
