How many of you just felt your blood pressure spike at the sight of EEOC letterhead? 😬
Take a breath. A recent Fourth Circuit decision is a powerful reminder that employees can’t sue on claims they never raised in their EEOC Charge. In Sharifi v. University of Maryland, the court shut down a retaliation claim that appeared for the first time in the lawsuit — not the Charge.

Translation for employers: sometimes the defense is hiding in plain sight. 👀
Read why missing boxes and missing facts matter — and how a Charge can buy you time and leverage.

Can an employee sue you for discrimination claims they never raised with the EEOC? A recent Fourth Circuit case says no. Learn why unalleged claims—like retaliation—may be dismissed and how a close reading of the EEOC Charge itself can become one of an employer’s strongest defenses.

👉 Read what this really means for employers.

In January 2026, the EEOC rescinded its 2024 Guidance on workplace discrimination. While the move targets Biden-era interpretations — particularly protections for transgender employees — the law itself hasn’t changed. Title VII and Supreme Court precedent still apply. Here’s what employers r...
