The federal judge in Mississippi also imposed fines and canceled the civil trial, removing all four lawyers from the case.

On May 22, 2026 the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD") issued a memorandum effectively rescinding the obligation of landlords to make accommodation for untrained emotional support animals under the Federal Fair Housing Act. The obligation to make accommodation for service animals is not changed. However, Florida has its own Fair Housing statutes. In 2020 Florida passed F.S. 760.27, specifically requiring accommodation for emotional support animals. That statute is not rescinded based on the HUD memorandum. It remains to be seen if Florida will follow suit. For now, compliance with the Florida statute is still required.
