What happens when someone who spent more than 30 years producing television and massive live events decides to turn those skills toward helping her own community?
On this episode of The SCV Law & Life Podcast, Mason sits down with Lisa Ely, founder of NourishNow CA, a Santa Clarita-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing surplus food and other usable items and getting them directly into the hands of people who can use them.
NourishNow CA operates differently from a traditional food pantry. There's no warehouse and no predictable inventory. Lisa and her team rescue available food and goods from local retailers and redistribute them through community pop-ups—often the same day. What shows up depends entirely on what was rescued.
For Lisa, the mission tackles two problems at once: helping people in the community while keeping usable food and other items out of landfills.
Before NourishNow, Lisa spent more than three decades in television and live-event production, including work on the Rose Parade. She says that experience taught her something she's carried into her nonprofit work: even the biggest undertaking ultimately depends on people showing up, solving problems, and believing in the outcome.
Mason and Lisa talk about that career transition, the realities of food waste, what need actually looks like in Santa Clarita, the logistics behind rescuing and redistributing food quickly, the role volunteers and local businesses play, and what Lisa has learned about her community through the people she serves.

She later founded Beyond the Spectrum, where she provides child-led, play-based ABA therapy and works with families throughout the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys.

A fun day at an amusement park can quickly become overwhelming when an accident causes a serious injury.

Insurance companies often label neck pain as a “pre-existing condition,” but that does not necessarily defeat an injury claim.
