The future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in writing and reviewing legal documents is currently a hot topic. However, it does not appear that attorneys are going to be replaced by machines anytime soon.

AI may be able to help attorneys. Computers are great at automating repetitive tasks, such as scanning for typos and errors, and AI is becoming effective at comparative content analysis to flag where a proposed edit deviates significantly from a standard library. However, the currently available AI solutions tend to be narrowly focused on specific tasks, such as analyzing the vast, yet finite number of possible moves on a chess board and determining the best next move.

Psychologist Carl Jung introduced the concept of “Synchronicity” to describe circumstances that, based on an individual’s subjective experience, are meaningfully related or metaphorically connected, even though there does not appear to be any measurable, observable causal connection. This human ability to find connections in seemingly unconnected issues is at the heart of creativity and problem-solving abilities.

In the foreseeable future, it is unlikely that AI will create meaningful emotional connections that are not based in measurable, observable causal connections. For example, our society has a shared metaphor of the connection between the death of a loved one and the image of a candle burning out. Current AI algorithms do not demonstrate an ability to find such connections and thus are less likely to bring a needed level of creativity to a task of problem solving.

At the heart of contract writing is the ability to problem solve; to find solutions that work for all parties to a contract. I don’t believe that AI will replace attorneys anytime soon, however, it will prove to be an exceptionally useful tool that helps attorneys focus on more complex issues that require creative solutions.

Great article from DIY Musician.

In most cases I highly recommend that everybody consult with a lawyer prior to signing any contract. I am dealing with one now that the parties involved thought that they were making a simple agreement so they wrote it up themselves, and NOW that their relationship is falling apart, they are finding that the agreement doesn't cover many of the things they need it to.
