As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, we'd be remiss if we didn't highlight Emma "Grandma" Gatewood ❤️

This amazing woman was a trailblazer in Ohio for the outdoors. She spent five months thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 1955. She became the first female solo thru-hiker on the Appalachian Trail at 67 years old 😮 🎉

While this feat on its own is remarkable, what makes it even more special is that she did it with no special hiking gear. She did it with only 17 lbs., consisting of a coat, a shower curtain (for shelter), a blanket, some food and first aid supplies. Grandma Gatewood hiked the trail again in 1957 and 1964.

She was a founding member of The Buckeye Trail Association and was present at its first hike in 1959 at Hocking Hills State Park. Grandma Gatewood went on to traverse 14,000 miles. She's a powerful example that it’s never too late to start a new journey at any age.
