IE Alert for NRIs: December 31 Deadline to Convert PIO Cards to OCI

December 31, 2017 is the final deadline for conversion of all PIO (Person of Indian Origin) cards into OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards. Those missing the deadline and failing to get their PIO cards converted into OCI cards will have to pay a fee of USD 275, which is equal to the fee for issuance of a fresh OCI card. The PIO card holders may note that traveling to India on the strength of their PIO cards (handwritten) will be refused entry at the Indian immigration counters after ICAO’s rules or guidelines come into effect by October or November 2018.

FYI: Deadline to convert PIO to OCI is approaching fast. Get yours done before 31st December, 2017 to proceed without consular fees.

"With effect from October 2018, International Civil Aviation Organization will accept only machine readable travel documents and hence the existing PIO cards will become invalid. Therefore it is advisable to obtain machine readable OCI cards in lieu of existing hand written PIO cards on gratis basis before 31st December 2017." Source: CKGS
