Inspiration

โ€œInclusion.โ€ The significance of the word has always been obvious to me as allowing the freedom to be present among members of a group. Upon the birth of my first child, I learned the truth of its power as a right permitting access to participation in society; and, further, that it is not always guaranteed.

As a new mother of a son with Autism, it became evident in short order that the societal rights and privileges I had always taken for granted were something for which my son might have to fight. But when it came to education, it was clear the fight had in large part already been forged by the brave parents and skilled and compassionate educators that came before us. As an attorney I knew how to interpret and apply the eloquently written laws outlining the rights our predecessors secured for our beautiful children. This permitted informed participation in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process to which my son is entitled under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). I was fortunate to collaborate with the expert educators, paraprofessionals and administrative members of his IEP team on the formation and implementation of a uniquely tailored, challenging and inclusive education program. My collaborative advocacy on his behalf is inspired by his commitment to learning, and his relentless pursuit of inclusion has called me to found IEP Collaborative, Inc. (IEPC). IEPC will empower students and parents to approach the IEP process with collaborative advocacy and precision to increase the likelihood of accurate implementation and student success.

Recent validation of our childrenโ€™s quest for inclusion by the Ninth Circuit and Supreme Court encourages our work with the pronouncement that IDEA requires schools to โ€œimplement an IEP that is reasonably calculated to remediate and, if appropriate, accommodate the child's disabilities so that the child can โ€˜make progress in the general education curriculum,โ€™ taking into account the progress of his non-disabled peers, and the child's potential.โ€[1] IEPC launches with this powerful, inclusive standard anchoring its mission on behalf of the children and families it is privileged to serve.

I am honored to dedicate IEPCโ€™s mission to secure inclusive and challenging education under the IDEA and related laws through collaborative advocacy.
