This statue depicts two of our family ancestors, Fee Lee Wong and one of his children. As an immigrant from China to the United States in the late 1800's, Fee Lee Wong at times faced massive challenges, but he realized his American Dream by owning a store, raising his family, and becoming a prominent member of the community in Deadwood, South Dakota. When he was denied reentry after the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed, people across the state, including a congressman, rallied around him in support and successfully helped him to return. To this day he is remembered as a revered figure and is now being recognized as a part of the Legends of Deadwood public art project. In honor of his legacy, we should do all we can to keep immigrants' dreams alive.
