BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Before you tell your spouse you want a divorce, there’s one question I wish more people would ask:
What happens the morning after?
Not emotionally.
Practically.
Do you know where the money is?
Can you access the accounts?
What happens with the house? The children? The business?
And what might your spouse do once they know?
After 30 years in family law, I’ve learned that people often spend weeks—even months—working up the courage to have the conversation.
But very little time preparing for what that conversation may set in motion.
This isn’t about being secretive.
It’s about being prepared.
Know what you own.
Know what you owe.
Know what you can access.
Know what you don’t know.
Then decide when—and how—to have the conversation.
Because some words change what happens next.
Before you decide, get strategic.
