We have been seeing an alarming increase in hit-and-run collisions on the roadways. While this may be anecdotal to our firm, it serves as a reminder to check your auto insurance coverage.

Most importantly, you should confirm that your auto insurance policy has Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM). In CA, this coverage must be offered by insurance companies, but you can opt out. Do NOT reject it! This provides you coverage in a hit-and-run collision, or if the other driver is not properly insured. Your UM coverage limit usually coincides with your Liability coverage limit, which in CA, the state minimum is $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident.

In many auto accidents, $15,000 is simply not enough to cover your hospital bills, medical care, lost earnings, and all the intangible harm from injuries. If you're in this camp, we would recommend that you consider increasing your auto policy limits to $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident.

In fact, on September 28, 2022, Governor Newsom signed S.B. 1107 which will effectively update the CA motor vehicle liability minimum to $30,000/$60,000 on January 1, 2025. (The current CA mandatory insurance minimum of $15,000/$30,000 was set 56 years ago in 1967!) So, you might as well get ahead of the game, and know that you are protecting yourself and your loved ones in the event of an unfortunate accident. Drive safely out there!

An important initiative will be on the ballot November, 2022 to bring a much needed update to California's cap on quality of life and survivor damages for patients harmed by medical negligence.

Former CA Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner Endorses the Fairness for Injured Patients Act:

The Fairness for Injured Patients Act has qualified for the 2022 ballot and would make a modest adjustment to an outdated law.

Student loan borrowers can now postpone payments for 60 days without interest. However, it currently only applies to federally held loans, and you must contact the company that handles your federal student loan to request the COVID-19 forbearance.
