Our Story

Founded in 1980 by Linda Pugliese, CRS has always been on the cutting edge of court reporting technology, offering their customers the latest in litigation support. We strive to be one step ahead to make your job easier.

CRS is an acronym for Computer Reporting Service, our legal name, that was very cutting edge back in 1980 when Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) was just getting started. In those days our computer cost $12,000, had no hard drive, and our operating system and program were on one 8-inch floppy disk and our data was on another 8-inch floppy disk.

The data was captured on a data cassette attached to our steno machine (which amazingly has a keyboard that has not changed very drastically since it was invented in the early 1900s). The data cassette contained every stroke that was written phonetically on our machine and at the end of the day we would put it in a reader for transferring to the computer. It would take ALL NIGHT for the transfer. Amazing!

After transfer to the computer, it was magically translated from shorthand into English according to the dictionary entries that we painstakingly entered when building our dictionary. Then came the fun part. Instead of typing from our shorthand notes, now all we needed to do was clean up punctuation and untranslates and mistranslates. Was it faster? I don’t know, but it was more fun.

Our printers were dot matrix printers that had paper with holes on the edges for feeding through, and at the end of a long day of printing, all those edges had to be burst by hand. I used to pay my children to do it for me. They loved it.

As computers got faster, with bigger hard drives, it got easier. The history and transition from these monster computers to the small compact ones we use now is incredible. But the fact is, the skill and knowledge of the court reporter who creates the data to be transformed is still the same.

The technology allowed us to create instant transcripts, also known as real-time, and now attorneys, judges, and audiences can see the spoken word instantly on their screen. This cannot be duplicated by AI or voice recognition software. Maybe in some distant future, but not now. Have you looked at your voice recognized email translations lately? Not something that will pass the high standards of the record being made for litigants, those accused of a crime, family court, or the need for a verbatim, accurate transcription for appeal purposes.

Do not be influenced by advertisements for “new” technology and promises of voice recognition and translation by a computer being better than a thinking human being with the skills necessary to discern accents, ask for clarification if the words are garbled or there is cross-talk. And if the audio is being transcribed by an uncertified human sitting at home in their pink bunny slippers, is that transcript with many “inaudibles” or “simultaneous cross-talk” really a better record than from a certified court reporter who is actually at the proceedings, stopping the parties when necessary for an accurate record?

We’ve been on the cutting edge for many years and this kind of technology is not a step into the future, it’s a step backwards.
