“How Much Do Florida's Undocumented Immigrants Pay in Taxes? Numbers May Surprise You” | Published by the Miami Herald
$1.8 billion in state and local taxes in 2022 were paid by undocumented immigrants in Florida. Based on insight from the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy, a left-leaning nonpartisan think tank in Washington D.C, Florida was determined to be one of six states where undocumented residents contributed over $1 billion towards taxes for multiple purposes.
In total, an estimated 10.9 million undocumented immigrants in the country paid $96.7 billion to the federal, state, and local government in 2022. Contrasting allegations that undocumented immigrants are burdens on the public treasury, made by Governor Ron DeSantis, as well as other GOP leaders, the report clearly highlights how this population has supplemented the American economy.
Six states are home to the largest undocumented immigrant population in the country: California ($8.5 billion in taxes), Texas ($4.9 billion in taxes), New York ($3.1 billion in taxes), Illinois (over $1 billion in taxes), and New Jersey (over $1 billion in taxes). An influx of migrants could add $1.2 trillion in federal revenue, over the next decade.
As increased notice points to the lack of power for undocumented immigrants to access the public services they are funding, disputed comments made by the Republican governor are being fact-checked.
Nevertheless, traction remains for GOP leadership in criticizing the immigration realm. Governor DeSantis signed numerous immigration-related bills in May of 2023, with the intention of preventing Florida taxpayers from “footing the bill for illegal immigration” (Miami Herald). Texas, Florida, and numerous other Republican-led states sued the Department of Homeland Security over the Biden administration’s parole process, which allows Cubans, Venezuelans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans to find legal work and placement in the country, on a two-year basis. At present, the program is on pause because of concerns regarding fraud amongst sponsors.
The contrasting concerns of leadership can make finding the facts difficult. Checking claims made is always essential.
