Traffic school in California isn't a discount. It's a rebranded bill.
Here's what most drivers don't realize when they check the "traffic school" box:
- The traffic school fee the court charges you equals the full bail on your ticket. Base fine plus every state and county assessment, surcharge, and penalty already built into what you'd owe. You're paying the same dollar amount you would have paid on the ticket itself — it's just called a "TVS fee" now.
- On top of that, you pay an additional court fee. Statewide it's $49 (Vehicle Code § 42007.1) plus a small DMV monitoring fee, plus any local court-added fee your county tacks on. Depending on your county, that extra charge starts at about $52 and can be higher.
- You also pay the traffic school itself. Usually $20 to $50, depending on which provider you pick.
So a real-world example: a 16-25 mph over speeding ticket is $363 in total bail on the California Judicial Council schedule. Elect traffic school and you pay approximately $363 + $52 (or more) + your $20-$50 school tuition = roughly $435 to $465 out of pocket, for a typical case.
All you get for that extra money: your DMV record stays clean on this one ticket. That's the whole trade. You pay more, you keep the point off. That's it.
It's worth asking whether fighting the ticket costs you less than the TVS pathway — and whether you'd rather have a chance at a real reduction than a guaranteed mask.
