This week is Fire Prevention Week. The National Fire Protection Association’s theme this year, "Charge Into Fire Safety," focuses on lithium-ion batteries and the charging habits that keep them from becoming a fire risk.

Lithium-ion batteries are used to power phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, and scooters. When they are damaged, defective, or charged with the wrong equipment, they can overheat, ignite, and create fires that are hard to extinguish. A few habits that can reduce your risk of fire include using the charger that came with the device, charging on a hard, flat surface rather than a bed or couch, and charging larger items like e-bikes outside and away from exits.

Partner Loren Schwartz recently spoke with KRON 4 News about his lawsuit on behalf of a San Francisco nanny who was hit by a pickup truck while crossing Chestnut Street at Laguna Street with a 2-year-old in a stroller.

The lawsuit alleges the driver made an unsafe turn into the crosswalk, resulting in his client suffering significant injuries to her left ankle, knee and hip, as well as a mild traumatic brain injury. She has since returned to work but will still need continued treatment and physical therapy.

Loren noted that while additional safety measures, such as flashing lights or a raised crosswalk, could improve the intersection, drivers still have a responsibility to operate safely around pedestrians. The 2-year-old's mother has also taken local action, communicating with local government officials and advocating for improved pedestrian safety measures in the area.
